Dorygnathus

Dorygnathus

Dorygnathus was an Early Jurassic pterosaur that lived approximately 190 million years ago. Fossil specimens of Dorygnathus have been discovered in what is now Germany. Its fossils are quite plentiful, for pterosaur with thin, fragile bones that were rarely formed into fossils. Dorygnathus wingspan measured 3 feet 3 inches long.

Dorygnathus skull was long with large eye sockets. Dorygnathus had remarkable teeth. Near the front, the upper and lower jaws had very long, curved, and sharp teeth. They were pointed forward and interlocked when the jaws were closed. These teeth were perfect for catching slippery fish out of the water. The smaller finer teeth towards the back were perfect for carrying food firmly as Dorygnathus flew back to its roost for a feast.
